Studies on Staphylococcus in Hospital Air

Abstract
In order to investigate the contamination degree in the air of Chonnam University Medical School Hospital, staphylococci were isolated from the air of various places of Hospital by means of fall out method during the period from June to August of 1967. The isolation rate, antibiotic and biological character were studied and the following results were obtained.
1) The staphylococcus aureus was isolated from all places of hospital. Among the total 109 strains, 79 strains (72.5%) were coagulase positive, and it was revealed that generally the more crowded the examined places, the more staphylococcus aureus isolated. Average number of colonies of all types of staphylococcus and staphylococcus aureus in each plate were 370.9 and 20.9, respectively, per 2 hours of exposure.
2) Among 79 of coagulase positive strains and 30 of coagulase negative :strains, 61 positive(77. 2%) and 17 negative strains(56. 7%) fermented mannitol.
3) Antibiotic resistant test was performed by agar plated method and it was found that resistant rates of staphylococcus aureus were as follows kanaznycetin (29.1%), aureomycin (24.0%), streptomycin (19.0%), penicillin and chloramphenicol (17.7%), ledermycin (15.2%), and erythromycin (1.3%). Allstrains tested were susceptible to methicillin.
4) As for the distribution of antibiotic resistant staphylococcus multiple antibiotic resistant strain was more predominant than single antibiotic resistant one.
5) Resistant rate of coagulase positive staphylococcus to various antibiotics tested seemed to be related to the examined places.
